An extremely tall, mid-20th century, art pottery ceramic floor lamp by Tilgman’s Keramik of Gothenberg, Sweden, designed by Marian Zawadzki and signed with initials “AMZ 1966”. The raised design in subtle blues and greens with white high-lights on the dark grey sgrafitto background depicts a scene from Norse mythology where Odin (the principal Scandinavian god) with his spear and shield is leading a horse and Valkyrie bearing a fallen warrior to Valhalla.
The ceramic lamp base is in perfect, unmarked condition and in good working order, although the shade is probably of the same age it may be a replacement and does have signs of wear.
Dimension: H 35”/89cm to top of light fitting.
Item Reference No. LM 30.
Price: £975.00
About the Artist and Producer:
Marian Zawadzki (1912-1978) A Polish refugee began working at Tilgman’s in 1953, where he developed his use of sgrafitto a textured ground associated with Tilgman’s; a technique where the decorative elements are hand-painted with overglazes and out-lined by fine lines carved into the background down through the coloured glaze to a dark grey clay slip, creating a textured ground which became so popular that the style was adopted by many other Swedish potteries
Tilgman Keramik based in Goteberg, Sweden from 1953-1970 and in Ireland during 1948-1975, when it closed following the death of the founder and artistic director, Paul Harald Tilgman (1904-1974).
