About the Designer

Henry Walter Klein (b.1919 in Norway) studied mathematics and languages prior to joining the Royal Norwegian Navy during the war where he became interested in cabinetmaking and, in 1949,  he went on to study in Fredriksberg, Denmark (where Finn Juhl was teaching at the School of Interior Decoration) graduating in 1952 before returning to Norway designing interiors and furniture.  With his mathematical and design skills, Klein’s craftesmanship produced some highly-skilled and aesthetically pleasing pieces and in 1960 he returned to Denmark to begin a collaboration with Bramin creating many of his most famous mid-20th century designs. Sometime after the closure of Bramin in the 1980s, Klein continued to design furniture eventually moving to San Francisco where, undoubtedly, both he and his contemporaries have greatly influenced the success of Scandinavian design throughout the USA.
