About the designer - Sigurd Resell (1920-2010)
Sometimes recorded as, Sigurd Ressell, was born in Norway and studied at the Oslo State Arts and Crafts School, before embarking on a career as an interior architect and designer, enjoying huge success with designs for various prominent Norwegian organisations and furniture producers, such as, Niels Vodder, Rastad & Relling.
During the early 1960s, Resell began experimenting with steel components leading to a design for Anders Grasaasen in collaboration with Cato Mansrud, prior to commencing freelance design work for Vatne Lenestolfabrikk in 1968 (now Vatne Mobler) where he became particularly famous for his 1971 design of the Falcon Chair. The original having a steel frame followed by the stained bentwood version in 1974; the latter reputedly tripling Vatne’s sales within just two years and going on to be an iconic piece with continued popularity ever since.
Having received numerous awards throughout his career, Resell’s influence and thirty year contribution to 20th century design was recognised in the 1990 exhibition at Gallery Vognremissen, Oslo.
