About the Designer - Arne Norell (1917-1971)
Swedish designer first opened a workshop in Stockholm in 1954, before moving to Småland in 1958 where he started the Möbel AB Arne Norell company from where furniture, including many of the original designs, continue to be produced under the Norell Möbel AB label today. In addition to being posthumously awarded the 1973 British Furniture Manufacturer’s “Showpiece of the Year” for his Ari chair design, Norell is highly regarded for the use of traditional materials, in particular, combining leather with turned and bentwood frames; a technique, superbly illustrated in the Ilona style seen here and other designs such as the Inka armchair, Indra & Kontiki sofa – all are collapsible and use leather strap supports to hold the light wooden frames together.
