2 Seater Sofa & Footstool - Finn Juhl’s Japanese Model 137 & 137F
A completely original set designed in 1953 by the highly regarded Danish designer, Finn Juhl (1912-1989) and made by France and Son. This iconic and highly collectable 2-seat sofa, with a matching footstool, known as the Japanese sofa and is said to have been inspired by the Torri gate or Miajima water gate off the coast of Itsukushima Island near Hiroshima which appears to float.
Covered in the original hand-sewn burnt orange, woven wool fabric, the sofa and footstool appear to float on solid teak frames whilst brass fittings connect the distinctively turned rail to the shaped sofa back.
Both pieces are in excellent condition considering their age and continue to be extremely elegant and stylish.
[Please note: The Japan series has been re-issued by permission of Finn Juhl’s widow, although those items are only available in oak or walnut, whereas the teak used by quality makers such as France & Son for this original set was slow grown timber that is no longer available today.]
Dimensions of Sofa: L 50½”/128cm, H 30”/76cm, D 27”/70cm. SH 12”/ 31cm.
